Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue Firefighter/ Paramedic Matt Schmitz brings home Two Gold Medals
PORT LUDLOW—Firefighter/Paramedic Matt Schmitz, representing Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF Local 3811) went to Vancouver, British Columbia to participate in his first ever World Police & Fire Games. When he came home this past week, he brought with him two Gold Medals as well as two WPFG world records!
Competing against athletes from all over the world, Matt participated in the Bowhunter Freestyle Unlimited (unmarked 3D and field archery), both of which he currently holds national Field Archery Association records.
PLFR Fire Chief Ed Wilkerson stated that “it is quite the accomplishment to not only compete in these prestigious games, but to bring home the gold was an outstanding effort on Matt’s part and we are very proud of his efforts and his desire to represent our organization”.
In 1985, the World Police & Fire Games Federation, a non-profit organization, run by the Californian Police Athletics Federation, established the World Police & Fire Games.
Today, the World Police & Fire Games are a spectacular international sporting event, offering police officers, firefighters, customs and correction officers from around the world an opportunity to showcase their athletic excellence in over 65 sporting events.
Held biennially, the World Police & Fire Games was held in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia this month with over 10,500 athletes competing. The games will be in New York City in 2011.
The size and scope of the games continues to grow, with both the attendance and number of participating countries steadily increasing. The international community eagerly bids for the rights and opportunity to hold this exciting event.
